Technical Characteristics and Applications of MMO Titanium Strip Anode

MMO (Mixed Metal Oxide) titanium strip anode is a type of auxiliary anode for cathodic protection, manufactured by coating a layer of precious metal oxide with electrocatalytic activity onto a pure titanium substrate. This oxide coating offers low polarization and an extremely low consumption rate, typically controlled within 1-6 mg/A·a. This characteristic allows the MMO titanium strip to maintain stable current output over a long period, with a service life of up to 50 years.

In the field of storage tank bottom plate cathodic protection, MMO titanium strip has become a mainstream choice. In engineering applications, MMO titanium strips and titanium conductor strips are laid crosswise and connected by spot welding using a dedicated welding machine, forming a grid-like anode mesh system. This mesh structure ensures uniform distribution of protective current across the tank bottom area, avoiding localized over-protection or under-protection.

In terms of technical parameters, the mainstream specification for MMO titanium strip is 6.35mm width and 0.635mm thickness, with a standard roll length of 152 meters. The conductor strip is slightly wider, typically 12.7mm wide and 0.9mm thick, also supplied in 152-meter rolls. Both use ASTM B265 Grade 1 pure titanium as the substrate material to ensure electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance.

Current output capacity varies with strip width. The 6.35mm wide specification outputs between 17-42mA/m, while the 12.7mm wide specification can reach approximately 84mA/m. Design service life is generally 20-50 years, depending on the operating environment and current load.

It is worth noting that MMO titanium strips do not require additional carbonaceous backfill material during installation and can be laid directly in wet sand or salt-containing sand layers. This greatly simplifies the construction process compared to traditional anode materials.

Usually used for cathodic protection of ground storage tank floor and reinforced concrete structure.

The intersections are connected by spot welding with a special welding machine to form a grid-like grid. The connection of the power-on point is connected by a special connector for the anode.
