The Technical Principle of MMO Tubular Anodes and Their Application in Cathodic Protection
In cathodic protection systems, the MMO tubular anode plays a central role. The term "MMO" stands for Mixed Metal Oxide. This type of anode typically uses a titanium tube as its substrate, which is coated with a layer of mixed metal oxides that possess high electrochemical activity. This structure gives the anode excellent electrical conductivity and an extremely low consumption rate, allowing it to deliver stable protective current for long periods in environments such as soil, fresh water, seawater, and various industrial media.
Compared with traditional anode materials, the main technical advantages of the MMO tubular anode are its dimensional stability and high current density output capacity. The highly catalytic activity of the coating means the anode itself undergoes minimal dissolution during operation. Its service life can extend to several decades, and it maintains consistent electrochemical performance throughout its entire lifespan. In practical engineering applications, this type of anode is often supplied as a "pre-wired" unit-meaning a dedicated cable is pre-welded to the anode's lead-out terminal, and the connection is sealed and insulated. This prefabricated design significantly reduces the need for on-site splicing and fundamentally lowers the risk of system failure caused by joint issues.

In terms of application scenarios, MMO tubular anodes are widely used in impressed current cathodic protection systems for large steel structures, such as long-distance pipelines, tank bottoms, circulating water systems in power plants, and steel piles in ports. Their high output efficiency and low maintenance requirements make them particularly well-suited for challenging conditions, such as environments with high medium resistivity or where a large area requires protection.
