Swimming Pool Titanium Anode Life Engineering and ISO 14021 Resource Utilization Certification
Engineering value is captured by a "low-salinity, low-temperature, low-by-product" optimisation. Traditional cells need 3.5 % NaCl, but RuO₂–IrO₂-coated Ti anodes operate at 0.3–0.7 % because their surface oxygen-vacancy concentration (5 × 10¹⁹ cm⁻³) adsorbs Cl⁻ as Cl–O–Cl bridges, cutting activation energy to 32 kJ mol⁻¹, only 60 % of that for DSA-O₂ anodes. When pool temperature drops to 15 °C, efficiency falls merely 8 %; the electron-hopping activation energy is 0.12 eV, below the 0.25 eV desorption energy of hydrated Cl⁻, so 90 % current efficiency is retained. By locking anode potential at 1.35–1.45 V vs. RHE, formation rate constants for ClO₂⁻ and ClO₃⁻ are 10⁻⁷ M s⁻¹ and 10⁻⁹ M s⁻¹ respectively, two orders lower than on graphite.

A bipolar Ti stack with 0.8 m² per plate at 0.8 kA m⁻² consumes 0.9 kWh m⁻³, 35 % less energy than bulk hypochlorite dosing. End-of-life is defined as ≥ 20 % coating mass loss, when polarisation resistance triples and cell voltage rises 0.3 V. The Ti substrate withstands 50 regeneration cycles with > 98 % material utilisation, compliant with ISO 14021 recycled-content claims.
